If you're working in tech, stability doesn't exist anymore. Meta and Intuit just announced sweeping layoffs last week and while disappointing, it's become the norm.

In just the last 2 months, I've chatted with 8 people who have been laid off. Here are some of their exact words:

  • "It was a real wake-up call to get laid off when I was working on really AI-forward initiatives and thought I was a lot safer than I was."

  • "It's been eye-opening how tough it is to interview compared to just two, three years ago… it made me think that I just don't want to rely on my corporate job."

  • "If I really want to try this, there will never be a time that is going to be more safe to do it… Maybe it's even better to do it now that I don't have kids."

When stability is taken away from us, we have a few options: (1) do nothing, (2) panic apply to new jobs we feel like are more stable, or (3) create our own stability.

And creating your own stability doesn't mean quitting tomorrow. It means making yourself less dependent on any single paycheck, and that starts with a few skills you can build right now, while you're still employed.

Start developing these 3 skills now to become less reliant on one paycheck
