Got a cold over the weekend. Jet lagged AF. Walking around like a zombie this morning… but made it to London! 🇬🇧
I’ll be here for three weeks, and this is my lifestyle experiment to figure out how/if London fits into my lifestyle.
Maybe I’ll move. Maybe I’ll decide to spend a month here or somewhere else each year. Maybe it’ll be a different option I didn’t consider, like cough falling in love with a British boy and moving to Notting Hill 😇.
Whatever it is, I’m keeping myself open to possibilities.
While I talk a lot about career moves in this newsletter, career and lifestyle decisions go hand in hand.
You might love working with animals but that doesn’t mean you should become a zookeeper.
Just like other things in life, testing the waters can give us valuable information to inform our big life decisions.
🧠 The way most of us approach big moves
When I was writing down my 2025 goals, I knew I wanted to go to London for an extended amount of time, but I didn’t know how to make it work.
It seemed logistically challenging given I made a whopping $375 in January and wasn’t willing to pay double rent in two expensive cities.
I was hoping to work an event or conference to get a free flight/hotel but when the chances of that were looking slim, I pivoted.
Instead of worrying about how I was going to get to London, I started focusing on taking action toward making it happen—step by step.
I talked to my roommate about renting our apartment. I posted a story on my Instagram saying it was available. I signed up for Kindred and referred friends to give me enough nights for this trip.
For many of us, the “how” often precedes the “what”, which can cause us to get lost in the details and worry about the worst case scenario.
If you can get laser focus on the “what”, you’ll figure out how to make it happen.
🎨 Designing your ideal lifestyle is closer than you think
I’m a romantic when it comes to dreaming up my ideal lifestyle: Wouldn’t it be nice to have multiple properties across the world? To take a month of vacation each year? To get flown around for free for work?
When I take a step back, the reality is I’ve already started building toward this.
I live in NY but have a house in the Catskills. I paid for my London flight with Delta miles from my work trip to Australia last year. I’m still working on the month-long vacation piece 🙂
Many of us dream about having the things we want “one day”, but there are simple things we can do to achieve parts of our dream lifestyle today.
Can you ask your manager to work remotely for a month? Can you pick up some work on the side to test out working for yourself? Even if they say no, are you making excuses or finding solutions?
🧠 Final thoughts
Your dream lifestyle starts with moving in the direction of the life you actually want. Whether it’s spending a month abroad or working for yourself, the reality is that it’s closer than you think.
💬 Your turn
In your dream lifestyle scenario, where do you live? How do you spend your time? Who are you surrounded with? Now, how close (or far) are you away from that today? Let me know by replying to this email 🙂
