Three years ago I had taken a month off of work. Well, I had taken FMLA leave because I had an existential crisis on what I should be doing with my career.

I went to the Catskills for the first time on a solo retreat to clear my mind and think about what was next. This wasn’t a bougie retreat but more of a cozy bed and breakfast where I stayed at an older couple’s home. Naturally, I told them my life story, my goals, and aspirations—one of which was to buy a house.

This was a goal I had for multiple years and while I took action toward it, it never seemed to come to fruition. I was very indecisive. I’d get cold feet. Every time I’d make progress, my brain would give me reasons why it wasn’t the right time.

But, here I am three years later writing from the house that I purchased in 2023.

It could be moving to a new city and taking on a brand new life, despite feeling scared of the loneliness that could come with it.

Every time I’ve made a big bet on myself, it was excruciatingly hard in the moment, but the learnings that come with betting on yourself compound.

I actually have a list of the big bets I’ve taken, and what they’ve taught me. It’s something I refer back to when a new challenge comes my way.

My big bets list (a sample)
