How to get out of your own way to achieve your 2025 goals
At the start of the year, it’s easy for us to think about all of the things that we want.
I want to lose weight.
I want to change my job.
I want to find a relationship.
Some of these things are pretty straightforward. If you do X, you will achieve Y. If you consume less calories than you burn, you will lose weight.
But, we all know it’s not always as simple as that 🫠.
One of my goals for many years was to purchase a house 🏠️ . To do that, I knew that I needed to follow the steps everyone goes through to buy a house.
Determine where I wanted to buy
Find a real estate agent and get pre-approved
Visit houses and make offers
Go through the buying process
Buy the house! 🎉
I had the steps laid out, but when I thought about #1, I felt stuck.
Should I buy in California where my parents live? What can I afford there? Should I buy out of state because it’s cheaper? How will I manage it? Should I buy in NYC and get a roommate? How long will I be in NYC?
I would get to steps 1 - 3 and then fear would kick back in. I wanted to buy a house so badly, but I was getting in my own way.
I realized it wasn’t just about following the steps. You also need to have other components in place to achieve your goal.
The Formula to Achieve Your Goal =
Clarity + Mindset + Action + Time
Clarity: Crystal clarity on what exactly you want and why.
Mindset: The belief that you can and will achieve your goal.
Action: The small steps you consistently take toward your goal.
Time: The ability to be patient, keep going, and don’t give up!
I had to get clear on what kind of house I wanted, including how much money I would realistically feel comfortable spending, how many bedrooms/bathrooms, location, etc.
I also had to change my mindset. Instead of letting fear control the decisions: You’re going to lose all of your hard-earned money! I could crunch the numbers and combat fear with evidence that this wasn’t true and replace with realistic, positive affirmations. Even if you lose some money, how can you learn if you never start?
After I got clear and reframed my mindset, I started taking action in a more intentional way.
Notice, this is not about motivation. A lot of times, you’re not going to feel motivated to do something, but it’s about picking yourself up and doing it anyway.
