I was on a call with a woman last week who spent nearly 12 years at one of the big tech companies.
She was good at what she did but coming back from maternity leave, she hit an inflection point. She realized she was running a race she didn’t want to run and was starting to ask questions like, how do I want the next decade of my life look like?
But because she worked at one company for the majority of her career, she felt restricted. Her job title was her identity, and while there was a desire to break out of it, she wasn’t sure how.
All of this makes sense when her entire world revolved around one way of work. Her friends, family, colleagues—everyone she had surrounded herself with—were used to work being a certain way. She had a boss, coworkers, a routine, and the stability of a paycheck coming in every two weeks. When that gets stripped away, by your choice or not, it can feel chaotic.
What was holding her back was this mental model shift from a 9-5, traditional career to a portfolio career that she could uniquely create. She wanted more conviction that this was a viable path and asked for examples of other women building their version of a portfolio career.
If you’re portfolio career curious…
A portfolio career is a career made up of multiple income streams, interests, and passions. It’s dynamic and ever-evolving and puts you in the drivers seat.
