Why is it so hard to say no?

The balance of finding aligned opportunities and keeping a steady pipeline

I’m a sucker for free things.

When I was an intern at Deloitte, I gained 10 lbs (I’m not lying) because they gave us free food all the time, and I had 0 self control. 😅

Whether you have a full-time job or work for yourself, it can feel similar when an opportunity comes your way.

It feels easy to say yes. GOOD, even! But just because something is free, doesn’t mean it’s actually good for you.

If you get to the end of this newsletter, there’s a fun challenge I thought we can participate in together, so keep reading!

🫡 Saying yes to everything

Everyone says, in the beginning of your business, you have to say yes to everything.

And so far, I have been.

  • I helped plan a 150-person Recess retreat

  • I’m working with an event agency on a gaming conference in June and a customer advisory board event in September

  • This fall, I have my own client work, planning a nonprofit gala and a coaching retreat in the Catskills

  • In marketing land, I’m helping a leave management software company with product releases

  • And on top of that? I’m creating content, hosting events, and writing this very newsletter ✨

While it might seem like I’m killing it, I’ve 1000% been feeling scattered and overloaded, working late nights and weekends to get it done.

I realize this is the opposite of the “feeling free” vibe, and I’d love to change that.

🫰Balancing pipeline with the right opportunities

When the amount of hours you work correlate to the amount of money you earn, it’s easy to think… work more = earn more.

It’s mentally challenging to say no to a high-paying job when you don’t have something else lined up, but I’m realizing to move forward with the vision I have for my life and work, I will need to say no at some point to have space for something else.

There’s a bare minimum number of money to make each month but beyond that #, I can create space to play, which brings me to…

⏭️ What I’m looking for next

So here’s what I’m calling in: projects, clients, and opportunities that check 80% of these boxes👇

🧭 My Guiding Principles (in priority order)

  1. Mission-driven clients or orgs with kind, easy-to-work-with people 🙂

  2. Designing meaningful experiences where people have fun and connect 🫶

  3. Involves travel, ideally internationally—or at least a fun city or town 🧳

  4. Creative freedom to plan themes, decor, vibes 🎨

  5. Opportunities to learn about venue selection, event production, budgeting, international travel planning 🤓

  6. Ability to work from anywhere when not onsite 💻️

☁️ Some examples:

  • Designing a creative entrepreneurship retreat for a women’s mastermind group in Mexico

  • Planning a founders dinner for a VC firm or early-stage startup in NYC filled with sponsored goodies and surprises

  • Crafting a curated food-focused retreat for a group of solo travelers in Europe

💬 Your turn

I plan to post more about what I’m looking for on LinkedIn this week and would love to see what you’re calling in too!

This doesn’t have to be a new job—it could be a side project, a sublease in a new city, or recommendations you’ve been meaning to gather. Remember to add some specific examples, so your network can get a clear picture of what you’re looking for next.

If you want to participate, tag me on LinkedIn or Instagram. I’d love to see what everyone is up to! 🙂

✨ Weekly Feels

I was up in the Catskills (again!) at Autocamp for a Recess retreat and realized one of my favorite parts about planning events is meeting the vendors and watching it come together.

DJ HBomb setting up and bringing good energy 🎶

On Sunday, I was feeling burned out from a crazy busy week and spent the day with some self-care—yoga, a massage, and a sweet treat at a new Turkish cafe. Ready to make this a more regular ritual in my life again!
