As a multi-dimensional person who enjoys doing lots of different things, I’ve had to pivot a few times over the course of my career.

Some of them were small adjustments, others were big leaps toward something totally new.

My career pivot journey looked like:

  • Management Consulting —> Competitive Intelligence

  • Competitive Intelligence —> Product Marketing

  • Product Marketing —> Fractional Product Marketing

  • Now: Events, Retreats, & Career Pivots

During my full-time gigs, I also did part-time experiments—from teaching Pilates to taking on a few small biz marketing clients.

If I started with zero without any experience and wanted to pivot into something entirely new again, these are the 5 steps I’d take

1. I’d invest in learning 📚

I’d listen to podcasts, watch Youtube videos, follow experts on social media, and absorb as much free knowledge as I could to help me learn skills I can take with me on the job.

Then, once I’ve capped my growth on free resources, I’d think about what paid programs, courses, or coaches might help me pivot faster or more effectively.

Here are some of the folks I follow and/or network with:

2. I’d connect with 2-3 new people each week 🤝

First, I’d conduct a LinkedIn search with the job titles I’m interested in.

Then, I’d send them a casual but well-researched message with a clear ask to chat in the next few weeks. I’d send an outreach message each day to have 2-3 phone calls each week.

In the beginning I might be nervous but over time I’d change my attitude from: “I’m scared I’m bothering them by reaching out” —> “I have nothing to lose. This convo could be mutually beneficial for both of us.”

3. I’d create my own opportunities 🪄

If I was working full-time, I’d make sure to network internally at my company, approaching folks with cool jobs as conversational calls about what they do, how they like it, etc.

If I wanted to explore an area further, I’d be transparent with my manager about my curiosity. I’d carve out a project that would drive value for the business, while still being on top of my other work.

If I couldn’t get experience at my full-time job, I’d create opportunities outside of my job. I’d look at the skills needed for the job I want and ask myself how I could start getting experience in those areas now.

4. I’d share what I was working on 📣

If I was working full-time, and I was scared of my boss seeing what I posted, I’d make sure to share what I was looking for 1:1 with the people I was networking and ask them if they had anyone else I could connect with.

If I posted publicly, I’d share not just what I’m pivoting into but how I’m feeling about building it. People relate to people, so I’d share my unique, authentic story (the ups and the downs).

5. I’d keep going until it worked out 🏃‍♀

I might face some setbacks, but I’d keep going until it worked out. Even if I get rejected from multiple job offers or can’t land the clients I want just yet, I’d continue working on steps 1-4 because I know it’s about the long game.

🧠 Final thoughts

Even with a tough job market, the right attitude and step by step action toward your career pivot can go a long way. Just start and don’t give up!

Weekly Feels

It’s my first full week back in NYC since living in London for the last 5 weeks, and it feels like nothing has changed but everything has changed.

I’m back in my busier routine and a busier season in general. I definitely feel like a lot of momentum is happening right now, and I’m trying to ride the wave! 🌊

At the same time, I’m also needing to balance the many moving pieces between a new offer, travel, client work, and personal rest.

That’s why this month’s word is: compassion 💗. In the past, I’ve muscled through busy season, beating myself up when I don’t get everything done. I’m working toward changing that! What’s your word for September? (Reply to this email to LMK!)
